Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Also called UL. A nonprofit organization in the United States that develops and tests standards for product safety. It also evaluates products to ensure that they are not dangerous. UL is especially known for testing the safety of drinking water. It was founded in 1894 and is based in Illinois.
