The profit or loss realized by an investment at the end of a specified calendar year, stated as the percentage gained or lost per dollar invested on January 1.

Total Return for Calendar Year
The complete amount one receives on an investment in a year, expressed either as the rate of return or as a dollar figure. One calculates the total return simply by adding coupons or dividends to capital gains for the period between January and December.
