South African Futures Exchange
A branch of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange specializing in derivatives. Originally established in 1988 and owned by the JSE since 2001, the South African Futures Exchange consists of two main subdivisions, one for equity derivatives and one for agricultural derivatives. Both subdivisions offer a variety of investment vehicles, but the latter is well known for its futures contracts based on maize.

In South Africa, since the early 1990s, the engagement of the banks, grain warehouses and silos as well as grain traders and millers has been supported by the South African Futures Exchange (Safex), now part of Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Grain prices, traded on the South African Futures Exchange, affect the price of milk, eggs, and bread.
Structural improvements introduced by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Bond Exchange of South Africa, and the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX), were also boosted by the further relaxation of exchange controls.
