Deng Xiaoping A 20th-century Chinese statesman. Active in the Communist Party of China throughout his entire career, he served as China's de facto leader from 1978 until 1992. He was the major force behind China's pro-market reforms, including the establishment of a private sector and the acceptance of international trade.
