Taking delivery When the buyer actually assumes possession from a seller of assets agreed upon in a forward contract or a futures contract. Take Delivery To receive the underlying asset from a derivative, especially a futures contract. For example, if one holds a futures contract on 1000 barrels of oil at the time it matures, one receives the oil, taking delivery. In many futures contracts and other derivatives that are settled in cash, the holder does not take delivery. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
