T. Boone Pickens An American oilman and business man. He founded an oil company, Mesa Petroleum, in 1956, and built it into one of the largest independent oil companies in the world. In the 1980s, Mesa was deeply involved in mergers and acquisitions, buying and attempting to buy companies much larger than it was. Pickens developed a reputation as a greenmailer, one who buys stock in a company and forces the company to buy it back at a large premium to avoid a hostile takeover. In 1997, he established BP Capital Management, which manages hedge funds. He is also a noted patron of his alma mater, Oklahoma State University. He was born in 1928.
