Statistical Office of the European Community

Commonly called Eurostat. A directorate under the European Commission responsible for collecting statistical information within the European Union. Eurostat collects and analyzes demographic, economic and trade data. It also works to harmonize statistical methods used by members of the EU. It traces its origins to 1953 but was established under its present name in 1959.
