Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade

A 1979 agreement by members of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade that sought to ensure that administrative processes (such as certifications, testing, and other regulations) do not become a barrier to international commerce. It set up a series of voluntary standards to expedite and homogenize these administrative processes to reduce risk and cost for exporters. See also: ISO.
