Skyscraper Indicator A sign that a company or economy may soon begin to experience hardship based on recent construction of lavish buildings. For example, Northern Rock Bank in the United Kingdom began building a new, 10-story headquarters in 2006. In 2007, Northern Rock nearly collapsed and for a time was nationalized.
