Sberkassa

A savings bank in Russia. During the Soviet era, sberkassas were extremely important because personal loans were virtually impossible to obtain. As a result, one used a sberkassa to save up for large purchases. In the post-Soviet era, a sberkassa is analogous to a postal savings bank.
