An ancient Indian unit of area approximately equivalent to one-quarter hectare.

The practice of commemorating fallen warriors by the erection of a stone memorial - possibly a simple column with a bas-relief and perhaps the name of the warrior - was an established practice in the Sangam era when the songs of the Purananooru (a compilation of Tamil war and heroic poems) were composed.
