SEC fee SEC Fee A nominal fee the SEC levies on equity transactions on an exchange. Created by the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the fee was 1% of 1/300 of the dollar amount of the transaction until 2007. Since then, the fee is 1% of 1/800 of the dollar amount. The fee is collected by the brokerages involved in a transaction; these brokerages forward the fees to the SEC. The fees help pay for the SEC's operating expenses. It is important to note that debt instruments are not assessed this fee.
