Russell 2000 A market capitalization-weighted benchmark index made up of the 2000 smallest US companies in the Russell 3000. Russell 2000 Index An index, weighted for market capitalization, of 2,000 small cap, publicly-traded companies. It is considered the premier benchmark for small cap mutual funds.
