Run to Settlement The state of holding a futures contract until its expiration date. After a run to settlement, the holder receives the underlying asset. For example, if one holds a contract for 100 barrels of oil and runs it to settlement, one must buy the oil. Running to settlement is relatively uncommon as most contracts are settled in cash.
