A loss recognized when assets are sold for a price lower than the original purchase price.

Notes:
A portion of the realized loss may be applied against a capital gain or realized profit to reduce taxes.


realized loss
The amount by which an investment's acquisition cost exceeds the net proceeds from its sale. A realized loss, as opposed to a paper loss, may be used to reduce taxable income. Compare unrealized loss.
