Read the Tape

Informal; to observe transactions on the market without participating. Investors generally read the tape in order to identify buy and sell points. Regulators may also read the tape to look for evidence of illegal or unethical trades.

To observe security price and volume information as it appears on the consolidated tape. Some traders read the tape in an attempt to spot irregular trades or price movements that signal buying or selling opportunities.
