Riba

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Riba
The Arabic word for "excess," which is used as a byword for interest. The Quran explicitly prohibits Muslims to receive or take riba; many Muslims believe this forbids them from taking advantage of financial products based on interest. Because this removes most conventional products, Islamic finance was developed to offer an alternative, though critics contend these products still accumulate riba because they imitate "regular" finance.

Byline: VICKY ANDERSON LIVERPOOL One missed out on being named the best British building of the year and taking home the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize on Saturday night.
RIBA (Robot for Interactive Body Assistance), the product of joint research by RIKEN and Tokai Rubber Industries (TRI), is the first of its kind in the world, capable of safely lifting and moving a human patient of up to 61 kg from a bed to a wheelchair and back.
We have developed RIBA because we want to help caregivers when they are required to transfer patients between hospital beds and wheelchairs," the Telegraph quoted Mukai as saying.
