Protected Fund

A mutual fund backed by an insurance policy that guarantees a shareholder's initial investment assuming he/she does not sell his shares for a certain period of time. A protected fund allows the shareholder to make a return from investing in the stock market while also guaranteeing that he/she will not lose any money. Because this increases the possible return while reducing the risk, a protected fund is relatively expensive compared to other mutual funds.
