Piccolo retired to Lavington Stud in 1996 as the winner of four races, the feature of which was the 1994 Nunthorpe Stakes, which he was awarded in the stewards' room, and the 1995 King's Stand Stakes.
Palermo police chief Giuseppe Caruso said at the time of Lo Piccolo's arrest that with the Provenzano-Rotolo-Lo Piccolo triumverate behind bars, there was no one of the same stature to take their places.
That arrest appears to have stymied an ambitious plan by Lo Piccolo and his "family" to help themselves to a cut of the profits from a scheme to build a new stadium and commercial centre.
