Income received by an investment company from dividends and interest on investments less administrative expenses, divided by the number of outstanding shares.

Net Investment Income per Share
A way to measure dividends. One calculates the net investment income per share by taking the total dividend a company declares, subtracting administrative expenses and other fees, and dividing the quantity by the number of shares outstanding.

For investment companies, income from dividends, interest, and net realized short-term gains, adjusted for management fees and administrative expenses and divided by shares outstanding. Net investment income is paid to shareholders as a dividend. See also net realized capital gains per share.
