National Trust for Historic Preservation

A private, nonprofit organization (www.nationaltrust.org) dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America's communities. Each year it publishes a list of the country's most endangered places. For 2006, one of the top 11 most endangered places was a descriptive locale rather than a specific place. It was the corner of Main and Main, being the heart of downtown urban life and the hottest, most desirable redevelopment site for demolition of older buildings and construction of chain stores.
