general contractor

One who is responsible for construction of a building or other improvement for an owner or a developer. Most states have educational, experience, and insurance requirements as a condition of obtaining a general contractor's license. They also prohibit unlicensed persons from constructing improvements for another unless the project is under a certain specified size. The trade association is the Associated General Contractors of America (www.agc.org), established in 1918.You may check licensing requirements and the status of local contractors at www.contractors-license.org,maintained by the Craftsman Book Company.
