(redirected from Madoff, Bernard)

    0.01 sec.
Bernard Madoff
A broker and investment adviser whose firm was revealed in 2008 to be the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Before this revelation, Madoff was a well respected and supposedly successful investor and philanthropist. His penny stock company developed the computer technology that led to the foundation of NASDAQ. He served as chairman of NASDAQ and was on the board of the National Association of Securities Dealers. His victims included a large number of charitable organizations that had allowed Madoff's firm to invest their endowments. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to defrauding his victims of nearly $65 billion; he was sentenced to 150 years in prison.
