London Stock Exchange (LSE)
The U.K.'s six regional exchanges joined together in 1973 to form the stock exchange of Great Britain and Ireland, later named the LSE. The FTSE 100 index (known as the footsie) is its dominant index.

London Stock Exchange
A stock exchange in the United Kingdom. It is one of the largest exchanges in the world and its movements are indicative of the state of the larger market. More than 3200 stocks, bonds, and derivatives are traded on the London Stock Exchange. Many indices, notably the FTSE 100 track securities on the London Stock Exchange. It was established in 1801 but traces its origins to the British East India Company at the end of the 17th century.

London Stock Exchange (LSE)
The United Kingdom's largest equity exchange, founded in 1760 by 150 brokers who were kicked out of the Royal Exchange for rowdiness. The LSE provides a market for stocks, bonds, and depositary receipts of U.K. and foreign companies. The London Stock Exchange launched an electronic trading platform, SETS (Stock Exchange Electronic Trading), in 1997 and became a publicly traded corporation in 2000.
