Lipper Mutual Fund Industry Average

A series of indices that establish benchmarks for mutual fund performance. That is, the Lipper mutual fund industry averages allow investors to compare the performance of their mutual funds against other, similar mutual funds. Each index consists of the 30 largest mutual funds for each category. For example, a Lipper index of mid-cap funds consists of the 30 largest mid-cap funds, against which owners of shares in mid-cap funds can compare the performance of their investments.
