Leptons do not participate in the strong interaction because their color charges are annihilated.
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram that shows formations of four generations of leptons from annihilations of up and down quarks and antiquarks with one excited quantum state for each of them.
In each of four cases, or events, one track caroms off at a new angle after about a millimeter--the giveaway that a tau lepton from the tau neutrino-nucleus impact decayed into another charged particle plus neutral companions.
About 3,500 times heavier than the electron, the tau lepton is a member of the same family of subatomic particles as the top and bottom quarks (SN: 7/1/95, p.
The W can then decay into a lighter quark and an antiquark or into a pair of leptons (an electron and electron neutrino or a muon and muon neutrino).
The electron and electron neutrino, the muon and muon neutrino, and the tau and tau neutrino make up the lepton family.
Unlike photons, Z particles interact directly with all known quarks and leptons, and they cleanly decay into a variety of particle-antiparticle pairs.
