Irving Fisher A major 20th-century American economist. He was one of the first to suggest that the burst of an asset bubble caused by excessive debt results in deflation. He also advocated the idea that changes in the money supply directly cause price changes. He laid much of the intellectual foundation for what became monetarism. He lived from 1867 to 1947.
