R-value

A measure of the heat conductivity of material. The higher the R-value,the better the insulating qualities. The Federal Trade Commission,in something called the R-Value Rule, requires certain disclosures regarding insulation. Among other things, new home sellers must put the following in every sales contract: the type, thickness, and R-value of the insulation that will be installed in each part of the house.Failure to make the required disclosures amounts to a deceptive trade practice and is punishable by fines. For full text of the rule, see 16 CFR 460 available at the Government Printing Office Web site at www.gpo.gov.
