Institutional Account A brokerage account of a registered investment company, insurance company, pension fund or any similar organization. Some regulators, such as the MSRB, apply the term more generally to include banks and individuals investing an unusually large amount of money. Institutional accounts often receive preferential treatment from their brokers, such as lower commissions.
