Inscrutabili

Inscrutabili

An encyclical letter written by Pope Leo XIII in 1878. Among other things, it condemns revolutionary activity and materialism. While the letter blames these and other ills on the abandonment of God, Leo saw social injustice in industrial capitalism and danger in the socialist response to it. As such, this letter forms the basis of much of modern Catholic teaching on social justice.

This is the thematic title of Leo's first encyclical, Inscrutabili Dei Consilio ("On the Evils of Society," 1878) which clearly continues the subject of the cardinal's Lenten Letter by answering critics who accuse the Church of opposing "genuine progress.
