Illegal Alien
A foreigner not permitted to reside or work in a country. One may be an illegal alien if one overstays a visa, works in violation of one's visa or enters a country illegally in the first place. Illegal aliens may face jail time and/or deportation. Companies that hire illegal aliens also are subject to sanctions. The term is sometimes considered derogatory; some prefer "undocumented worker."
