High Risk Pools for the Medically Uninsurable A government-sponsored pool of liquidity for persons who, because of a severe illness or a pre-existing condition, cannot purchase health insurance. In the pool, one pays a premium (which is comparatively high due to the level of risk); the pool pays for medical expenses for policyholders up to a certain point and in most respects operates as a regular insurer. The main difference is the lack of need for profit, which enables the government to provide the insurance in the first place. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
