Hepburn v. Griswold A U.S. Supreme Court case holding that fiat currency issued during the U.S. Civil war was not legal tender and violated the Constitution of the United States. Specifically, the court held that the power Congress has to coin money requires that currency be backed by gold, silver or something similar. For that reason, one may refuse payment made in a currency not so backed. The case was decided in 1870 but was overturned the following year in Knox v. Lee and Parker v. Davis.
