A 1917 United States Supreme Court decision that confirmed the right of states to pass laws regulating the securities trade. The decision is perhaps best known today for its origination of the term "blue skying," coined when Justice Joseph McKenna asserted that states may and should protect investors from securities with "no more basis than so many feet of 'blue sky.'"
