H-1B Visa A visa granting the holder permission to live and work the United States for three years, with the opportunity to renew once. H-1B visa holders must possess sufficient skills to perform the work for which they are hired (though there has been controversy about the level of skill required) and, if they quit or are fired, they must return home, find another job, or apply for a change in status.
