Guyanese Dollar
The currency of Guyana. Introduced in 1839, it was originally related to the Spanish dollar (which widely circulated in Caribbean colonies) and was intended to facilitate the transition from a currency based on the Dutch guilder to one based on the British pound. It was pegged to the pound until 1975.

Books and supplies are scarce in Guyana, and a small child's book costs about 600 Guyanese dollars, 10 per cent of a teacher's monthly salary.
This increase is primarily the result of a substantial net foreign exchange gain in the quarter, but a more modest gain for the year, stemming from a decline in the US dollar value of the Guyanese dollar.
