gridiron

Used to describe the numbered rectangular street and avenue system once popular with urban planners. For example,101 1st Avenue would be on 1st Avenue, between 1st Street and 2nd Street.Contrast with the street hierarchy system (above),which is a more disorganized street system consisting of neighborhoods with very limited entrances and exits, and streets with names rather than numbers.
