Grandfathering In regulation, permission to continue an old practice even though it does not conform to new standards, provided it was practiced prior to the effective date of the new standards. For example, if Congress were to pass a law subjecting the automotive industry to certain carbon emissions standards, cars manufactured prior to the effective date of the legislation would likely be grandfathered and not be subject to the regulation. grandfathering An expression used to describe a statutory or contractual willingness to allow some activities or former rights to continue even though not technically allowed under current conditions. For example, downtown zoning regulations no longer allow gas stations in the area, but Fred's Fuel was doing business before the zoning laws went into effect,so it is grandfathered and can stay in business.
