E.F. Schumacher

A 20th-century German economist. For much of his career, he served as an adviser to the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom, in which capacity he promoted the use of coal instead of oil, fearing oil eventually would become prohibitively expensive due to its depletion. In his later career, he worked in economic development, advocating that the most sustainable means of development was to use local resources for local needs. He lived from 1911 to 1977.
