Fortune 500 Fortune 500 A list compiled and published annually by Fortune magazine of the 500 largest publicly-traded and closely held companies in the United States. The Fortune 500 measures "largeness" by revenue minus excise taxes; that is, a company with larger revenue is listed higher on the Fortune 500, regardless of other measures such as profit margin.
