Extension of Time for Filing

In taxes, the process by which one receives permission to file one's return at a later date. For example, in the United States, the deadline to file tax returns is April 15. If a taxpayer is unable to make this deadline, he/she may ask the IRS for an extension until October 15. In this case, October 15 is called the extension date.
