Export and Import Permits Act
Legislation in Canada that authorizes the Minister for International Trade to restrict goods that may be imported or exported. The Act sets out the criteria the Minister uses in making these determinations; steel, textiles and weapons may all be controlled under the Act. The Minister issues permits to regulate the import and export of restricted goods.

However, Canadian military aid, including transfers of surplus equipment from DND, is not subject to the Export and Import Permits Act and export permits are not required.
In 1991, however, the government passed Bill C-6 to amend the Criminal Code and the Export and Import Permits Act, both to permit Canadian industry to import and possess automatic weapons and to authorize the External Affairs Minister to approve exports and imports of automatic firearms.
The Minister's new tasks will include final approval of military export permits, the establishment of control lists required by the Export and Import Permits Act, and the tabling in Parliament of the government's annual report on Canada's arms exports.
