United Arab Republic
A brief political union between Egypt and Syria, formed in 1958. It was formed as part of a plan eventually to unite all Arab countries. Gamal Abdel Nasser, the President of Egypt, was the UAR president. He nationalized industry and sought to give aid to farmers; these policies were already being followed in Egypt but were thought to hurt the Syrian economy. Additionally, Nasser was accused of treating Syria more like an Egyptian province rather than as a state in a federal union. The UAR was dissolved in 1961, but Egypt continued to use the name for another 10 years.
