Dread Disease Rider

A provision in some life insurance policies in which the insurance company must pay the policyholder a portion of the death benefit if the beneficiary develops a serious illness, or a "dread disease." Common illnesses covered under the dread disease rider are heart disease and some kinds of cancer. This rider exists in order to help the policyholder pay the medical cost of the illness.
