Dialing for Dollars

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Dialing for dollars
A term used to describe the practice of cold calling, but which has negative implications as it is frequently applied to salespeople selling speculative or fraudulent investments.

Dialing for Dollars
Informal; the practice of making an unsolicited telephone call to a completely unknown person in an attempt to convince the person to become an investor of a particular venture. This practice is controversial and some jurisdictions have put in place laws limiting its legitimate use. In theory, dialing for dollars is the same practice as cold calling, but the former term has a negative connotation. One often hears of dialing for dollars in the context of a suspicious and perhaps illegal investment.
