Crack Spread A spread involving oil futures. In a crack spread, an investor takes a long position in crude oil futures and a short position in refined oil futures. This allows the investor to create an artificial position on the price of refining oil. Refineries are the most likely investors to enter into a crack spread. See also: Crush spread. During the mid-1980s, the use of crack spread widely, especially in inner-city New York. As compared to the hurricane-driven volatility of last year's third quarter, the relative stability this year resulted in higher wholesale market spreads and better realizations of the benchmark crack spread. The risk of persistent $2-plus per gallon jet fuel has abated somewhat in recent weeks with the narrowing of the crack spread between crude oil and refined product prices. |
