Collective Fund 1. A fund that has a set number of shares, which are then traded. Due to the finite number of shares, the fund's value rises and falls according to supply and demand. See also: open-ended fund. 2. A fund that has special permission from the IRS to include tax-exempt or tax-deferred investments such as IRAs or pensions in its portfolio in order to diversify.
