Chief Information Officer The officer at a company that is responsible for information technology and often other technological aspects of the company's operations. The CIO reports to the CEO; the position often has a negative connotation because of the (relatively) high turnover rate of chief information officers. Because of the graying line between information and security, some companies combine the CIO and the chief security officer into the role of chief information security officer.
