Broad-Based

Also found in: Legal 0.01 sec.
Broad-Based Index
An index that consists of many stocks or stocks in many different industries. Broad-based indices are not terribly useful in gauging the performance of individual industries, but help give an indication on movements in the broader economy. An example of a broad-based index is the Wilshire 5000. See also: Narrow-based.

broad-based
Of or relating to an index or average that provides a good representation of the overall market. The S&P 500 and NYSE Composite are generally regarded as broad-based stock indexes, while the popular Dow Jones Industrial Average is biased toward blue chips and is not considered broad-based. Compare narrow-based.
