Blue Cross and Blue Shield A group of 39 insurance companies in the United States. It provides health insurance to about one-third of the American population. Each affiliated company is separately incorporated to offer insurance in a single state or within a region. Primarily, it offers PPOs and HMOs, but it is also an administrator of Medicare.
